Volunteers Take Action to Clean, Restore and Renew Jackson’s Beauty
The 20th anniversary of Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest community improvement program, kicks off in Jackson with Keep Jackson Beautiful re-implementing Keep Jackson Beautiful Month starting on April 7, 2018.
The Great American Cleanup, which takes place annually in an estimated 20,000 communities nationwide, engages more than 5 million volunteers and participants, on average, every year to create a positive and lasting impact. Keep Jackson Beautiful along with Keep America Beautiful’s more than 600 community-based affiliates and partnering organizations, plan volunteer events and education programs that help to renew parks, recreation areas, waterways, remove litter and debris, reduce waste, improve recycling, plant trees, flowers and community gardens.
“This year Keep Jackson Beautiful is revisiting our past by reviving Keep Jackson Beautiful Month which took place in the Nineties. It was a way for all Jacksonians to be on one accord to help keep their communities beautiful,” said Keep Jackson Beautiful Executive Director Alicia Crudup. “With the current state of litter in our communities, what a fitting way to take care of our environment by showing we take pride in our City while celebrating Earth Month. We will be taking a different approach by letting our Eco Ambassadors, high school students, take the lead in the events. It’s up to us as adults to support them and help make the events successful. We aim to work through the youth to sustain our future.”

“We’re excited to kick off the 20th anniversary of the Great American Cleanup with events in Jackson and thousands of others throughout America,” said Keep America Beautiful President and CEO Helen Lowman. “Keep America Beautiful thanks its affiliates and partner organizations who work hard to create meaningful and lasting change in their local communities. The Great American Cleanup has been so successful over its 20-year history because local government, businesses, civic organizations and dedicated volunteers all work together to make sure every neighborhood is a clean, green and beautiful place to live and thrive in.”
The 2018 Great American Cleanup social theme – #cleanYOURblock – is a call-to-action to engage more volunteers and participants in public space cleanup, beautification and recycling events conducted by Keep America Beautiful affiliates nationwide. Once an individual becomes a Great American Cleanup volunteer with their local Keep America Beautiful affiliate or partner, the national nonprofit’s goal is that they will be inspired to take that experience home to organize a similar, smaller-scale event in their own neighborhood … even on their own block. Volunteers are invited to participate in a local cleanup – and/or conduct your own – and then celebrate your hard work afterward.
“The objective of a ‘Clean Your Block’ is to provide an opportunity to spread the word on beautifying communities, educate and encourage volunteers to build a sense of community pride and stewardship and offer experiences that help change behaviors with the goal of making a lasting, positive initiative on communities nationwide, block by block,” added Lowman.
In 2017, Keep Jackson Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup participants:
Cleaned 20 communities;
Removed 2,000 bags of litter and debris for safer, cleaner communities;
Cleaned and renewed over 100 lots;
Collected more than 790 bags of items for recycling or reusing, including PET plastic bottles, and newspaper; and
Maintained 6 community gardens.
National sponsors of the 2018 Great American Cleanup include Altria, Dow, The Glad Products Company, Lowe's, McDonald’s, Niagara Bottling and SC Johnson. Local sponsors include City of Jackson, Lamar Advertising, Waste Management, Republic Services, Whole Foods Market, Allen's Recycling and Hinds County Board of Supervisors.
