KEEP JACKSON BEAUTIFUL BUILDS OUTDOOR GARDEN/CLASSROOM AT BLACKBURN MIDDLE SCHOOL

January 20, 2016

Thank you to all the volunteers from JSU who gathered today on MLK Day, January 18, 2016 to build a Learning Garden at Blackburn Laboratory Middle School in Jackson, MS. As one of the main partners, Keep Jackson Beautiful received a $10,000 grant from Waste Management to help build the outdoor classroom/garden area for students at Blackburn. They will learn about growing vegetables as well as the importance of such things as pollinators and composting. Later, when the garden is producing, they will have a fruit stand where they can sell produce to neighbors and learn about entrepreneurship. There will also be a chef who will have classes about cooking the food they have grown.

All the partners and volunteers were very much appreciated. A special thank you goes to Waste Management for the grant that helped to make this new outdoor classroom garden area possible for Blackburn Middle School. It will teach students for many years to come about the environment and its importance to each of them.
