Summary of Position

The Environmental Coordinator will plan and execute and assist with the planning and organization of recycling efforts within the Great American Cleanup/Keep Jackson Beautiful Month, Adopt-A-Spot Program, Eco Ambassadors Program, the Jackson Community Garden Initiative, Environmental Film Festival, and the Awards Program. The Environmental Coordinator will assist with the management of the JXN Recycle Program, ensuring proper retrieval of recyclable materials and the handling of required documentation and recordkeeping of collections. The Environmental Coordinator works directly with the citizens via telephone, onsite visits, events, online and outreach educational programs to identify and educate them on proper environmental techniques to improve their quality of life. The Environmental Coordinator will be responsible for the assisting director with fundraising campaign including sponsorship, corporate giving, foundation and state agency grants, and special events. Works with mission related organizations to grow citywide partnerships and with the Solid Waste Division on litter prevention contract.


The goal of the position is to expand and grow sustainability of our natural and built environment, beautification, litter prevention and waste reduction programs in Jackson to benefit the Jackson communities and residents.

Job Duties

  • Community Recruitment, Training, and Retention

  • Conducts Eco Ambassador trainings on topics such as volunteer recruitment and program events.

  • Promotes and recruits for youth and educator environmental education.

  • Conducts outreach/recruitment activities to engage and retain new neighborhoods/communities.

  • Funding

  • Pursues funding opportunities from Federal, State, and local sources to assist with funding programs

  • Assists Executive Director in developing and executing an aggressive fundraising program.

  • Composing a list of potential members/sponsors/donors

  • Identifying and researching corporate prospects (including giving histories and associations)

  • Maintaining a database of membership/sponsorship list

  • Programs (Youth, Litter Prevention and Waste Reduction)

  • Promotes, recruit and supports the Great American Cleanup/Keep Jackson Beautiful Month, Adopt-A-Spot Program, Eco Ambassadors Program, the Jackson Community Garden Initiative, Environmental Film Festival, America Recycles Day activities and the Awards Program.

  • Assist with distributing cleanup supplies and materials and the collection of the supplies and materials

  • Oversees and facilitates recycling pickup and drop-off with hosts and recycler by coordinating recycling collection schedules to optimize service quality and efficiency

  • Monitors and evaluates existing sites and special event recycling programs and makes recommendations for education and service improvement.

  • Sets recycling plans, goals, and initiatives in the community to minimize waste and encourage program participation and compliance.

  • Supervising volunteers in the programs or projects

  • Obtaining and managing volunteer participation for events and programs

  • Maintaining a database of volunteers and keeping track of all volunteers and volunteer hours worked

  • Other Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the Executive Director by performing high-level clerical duties such as writing membership letters and proofreading letters and memoranda. All letters and memos are to be submitted to the Executive Director who will then submit them to the necessary parties.

  • Assisting with community outreach (meetings, attending special events) that is approved by the Executive Director

  • Coordinates and provides input and strategic guidance regarding programs

  • Relaying requests or information of Keep Jackson Beautiful to the Executive Director

  • Filling in for Executive Director when unable to attend event or meeting

  • Assisting with preparing reports required by Keep America Beautiful

  • Assists with website, e-news articles and other outreach tools to promote KJB programs and highlight activities.

  • Maintains up to date knowledge of relevant current events, legislation, and other information.

  • May act as liaison/representative to the public, other government agencies and City departments, various organizations, businesses, associations, etc.

  • Travels to annual national conference and/or other conferences and meetings as required.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategic plans

  • Develop relationships with media

  • Develop press releases, programs and written materials for organization

  • Serve as contact person and information clearinghouse on all committee activities.

  • Performing other related duties as assigned by Executive Director


Knowledge of:       non-profit operations knowledge; volunteer management; standard office practices; business English and math; environmental issues; public relations; and standard grant administration procedures. Knowledge of the City, strong supervisory and leadership skills, excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.


Ability to - operate personal computer using standard word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office); utilize and run reports in database software; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication, including public speaking; interact comfortably and tactfully with the public; prepare and implement budgets; establish and maintain effective working relationship with co-workers  and representatives of various governmental agencies; and organize multifaceted events; ability to stoop, squat, and lift and maneuver 40 pound boxes overhead. Maintain appropriate driver’s license applicable to job responsibilities and have a good driving record.
