What is a Litter-Free Event?

Any outdoor sports event that is clean and free of trash when the game is over!

Why Should Students Care About Litter or Want to Have A Litter-Free Event?

Because the school belongs to you, the students, and each one should take pride in how it looks!

Students want to create a team spirit towards putting litter where it belongs – in trash receptacles

Students want to set a good example for other schools by taking responsibility for keeping the stands, concessions and fields clean

Students want to show off their sense of pride so that visiting teams will notice and want to come back

Students want to encourage other schools to have litter free events

Students want to help provide a cost-effective alternative to the high cost of litter pick-ups at athletic events

A litter-free athletic field will help improve the appearance of the surrounding neighborhoods

You will have visible proof that Jackson Public Schools care about their community and want to look their best at all times

Why Do Students Litter at Sports Events?

Because they have no pride in their school!!!

They feel no sense of ownership in their school

They think it is someone else’s job to clean up after them

They think it is o.k. to add to litter that someone else has already thrown down

They are too lazy to find a trash receptacle

They don’t think it’s cool to use trash receptacles

How Do You Plan a Litter-Free Event?

Encourage sports fans to “leave the scene clean” by putting cups, cans, bags, paper, etc. in trash receptacles

Create a cheer-to-music that will get students moving – rapping - fired-up – excited enough to use trash receptacles

Do the cheer once each quarter

Get the school mascots involved

When the game starts have someone in the press box (the mascot) announce that your school has declared this a litter-free event

Announce where the trash receptacles are located

Ask students to put their cups, paper, cans, etc. in them instead of creating litter in the stands and on the grounds

Draw attention to the trash receptacles - decorate them – have a contest to see who does the best job
